Sauces

Red40 in sauces, dressings and mixes

Americans eat a lot of tomato based sauces and we associate a dark red color with many of our foods. In some cases, the tomato color has been augmented with Red40 to look even better. Red40 may also be found in beef flavored meals and mixes as a browning agent.

You'll sometimes find Red40 in canned cherries. Cherries tend to turn brown when processed (remember how dark a cherry pie is?) so if the manufacturer wants to return the food to that bright red color, they'll need some help from science. Normally Red #3 is used but some companies use Red #40.
