Red40 appears in a number of cold rememdies,
because it's a "perky" color. When you're low and
sick, you want to feel more energetic, so you take something
red, right? (as opposed to wanting to feel more restful and
tranquil, which is when you take something blue or green)
The color red is also used if the manufacturer
uses a cherry, strawberry or "berry" flavoring to
cover up the horrid taste of the active ingredient. If it
tastes like cherry, then it has to look like cherry too...
